WHAT DOES A PHYSICAL THERAPIST DO?
Physical therapy services begin with an initial evaluation of physical and mobility deficits including the ability to walk safely. Home safety, equipment needs, and your personal movement goals are also evaluated. A customized physical therapy program is then developed and may include some of the following:
-
Training and restoration of walking, balance, and mobility
-
Plan to address home barriers that may interfere with walking
-
Plan to reduce the risk of falls
-
Recommendations for wheelchair, walkers, crutches, or other mobility equipment
-
Training on the proper use of equipment such as walkers, client lifts, and sliding boards
-
Training in overall strength and endurance secondary to deconditioning post illness
-
Caregiver and family education and training
-
Development of a home exercise program
-
Driving evaluation and rehabilitation
-
CarFit evaluations
